How to generate rent receipts for your HRA claim

Claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA) is one of the easiest ways for salaried employees in India to reduce their taxable income — but your employer will almost always ask for proof. This free rent receipt generator lets you create professional, print-ready receipts in seconds:

  • Enter your name, your landlord’s name and the monthly rent.
  • Add the property address and, if your annual rent is above ₹1,00,000, the landlord’s PAN.
  • Pick the months you need — use the This FY or Last FY preset to create a full year at once.
  • Download a single PDF with one receipt per page, ready to print and sign.

Rent receipt & rent invoice format

A proper rent receipt — also called a rent invoice or rent bill — follows a simple format. The live preview above is a filled-out example you can copy. Every receipt this tool produces includes:

  • Receipt date and the period the rent covers (e.g. the month, or a full financial year).
  • Tenant name, landlord name and the rented property address.
  • Rent amount in figures and words, and the mode of payment (cash / UPI / cheque / transfer).
  • Landlord’s PAN (when annual rent is above ₹1,00,000) and a revenue stamp for large cash payments.

You get this format as a print-ready PDF, so there is no need to build a rent bill in Word or Excel by hand. For ordinary residential rent from an individual, no GST applies.

When do you need your landlord’s PAN?

If the total rent you pay in a financial year exceeds ₹1,00,000 (about ₹8,333 a month), the income tax rules require you to report your landlord’s PAN to your employer to claim the full HRA exemption. If your landlord does not have a PAN, you will need a signed declaration from them instead. Adding the PAN to each receipt keeps your paperwork consistent.

Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?

A revenue stamp (usually Re 1) is generally expected on a rent receipt when the rent is paid in cash and exceeds ₹5,000. When you pay by bank transfer, UPI or cheque, the transaction record itself acts as proof and a revenue stamp is normally not required. This tool automatically suggests the stamp for cash payments above ₹5,000 — you can turn it on or off with a single click.

The revenue stamp used is the standard Re 1 (one-rupee) revenue stamp. You can buy one at any post office, and often at stationery shops, courts and some banks. It is a tiny cost that makes a cash rent receipt watertight for your HRA proof.

Frequently asked questions

Are rent receipts mandatory to claim HRA?

To claim House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption, most employers require rent receipts as proof of payment. If your annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000, you also need to report your landlord’s PAN to your employer. Keeping monthly receipts is the cleanest way to substantiate your claim.

Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?

A revenue stamp (typically Re 1) is generally required on a rent receipt when the rent is paid in cash and the amount exceeds Rs 5,000. For payments made by cheque, UPI or bank transfer, a revenue stamp is usually not needed because the bank record itself is proof. This tool auto-suggests the stamp for cash payments above Rs 5,000, and you can toggle it on or off.

Is the landlord’s PAN mandatory on the receipt?

If the total rent you pay in a financial year is more than Rs 1,00,000 (roughly Rs 8,333 per month), you must provide your landlord’s PAN to your employer to claim the full HRA exemption. If the landlord does not have a PAN, a signed declaration is required instead.

Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?

Yes. You can pay rent to your parents and claim HRA, provided the arrangement is genuine — the property should be owned by them, you should actually transfer the rent (ideally by bank transfer), and they should declare that rental income in their tax return. Keep receipts as proof.

How many rent receipts can I generate at once?

You can generate up to a full financial year in one go. Set the "From" and "To" months (for example April to March) and the tool creates a separate receipt for each month — all in a single downloadable PDF, one receipt per page.

Is my data safe?

Completely. Every receipt is created inside your own browser and the PDF is generated on your device. Your name, your landlord’s details and the amounts you enter are never sent to or stored on any server.

What is the correct rent receipt / rent invoice format?

A valid rent receipt (or rent invoice / rent bill) format should include: the date, the tenant’s name, the landlord’s name and the rented property address, the rent amount (in figures and words), the period the rent covers, the mode of payment, the landlord’s PAN (if annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000), a revenue stamp for cash payments above Rs 5,000, and the landlord’s signature. This tool fills that exact format for you — see the live preview as a filled-out example.

Can I get the rent receipt in Word or a GST format?

This generator produces a clean PDF you can print or attach directly — there is no need to format a rent bill in Word yourself. Ordinary house rent from an individual landlord is not subject to GST, so a residential rent receipt does not need a GST number; GST only applies to commercial property rent above the registration threshold.

How much does a revenue stamp cost and where can I buy one?

The standard revenue stamp costs Re 1 (the one-rupee revenue stamp). You can buy revenue stamps at any post office, and often at stationery shops, courts and some banks. You only need one on a rent receipt when rent is paid in cash and exceeds Rs 5,000; for UPI, cheque or bank-transfer payments, the bank record is proof and no stamp is needed.
